    • Sand Point Country Club’s 6,200-yard, 18-hole golf course is perched above the shores of Lake Washington. Opened in 1927, the layout in northeast Seattle was designed by British golf architect Francis L. James, who crafted several prestigious, early-day Northwest courses. Over its nine-plus decades Sand Point has served as the training grounds for national and regional golf champions.

In 2020, the former tree-lined layout underwent a major remodel overseen by Scottish golf architect David McLay Kidd. The work involved a complete redesign of two holes, major alterations to 10 greens, tee and bunker renovations, 57 percent more short-cut fairway turf and 15 acres of native areas. Members and guests now face firm-and-fast playing conditions, slick/tilting putting surfaces, and over 90 fairway and greenside bunkers.

Yet the course’s hillside locale remains its predominant feature, leading to rolling terrain and tricky sidehill lies requiring every shot in the bag. On clear days Sand Point players enjoy views that stretch from Mount Baker near the Canadian border southward to Mount Rainier. There are very few golf courses anywhere blessed with such a spectacular locale.

Warm up before your round at the covered driving range, practice short-game area and putting green. Sand Point also features a full-service pro shop with a comprehensive supply of golf merchandise – from balls to gloves to clubs for all skill levels and ages.

“When I am asked to recommend improvements to a club, I look for two things: a membership that’s open to bold ideas and a golf course brimming with potential but unrealized. At Sand Point I found both in spades! The views from the course are spectacular. Although small, the property is filled with intrigue and adventure. We just needed to put all the pieces together and allow the course to become the 1920s’ classic it is, making Sand Point Country Club one of the preeminent clubs in the city of Seattle.” David McLay Kidd

“Sand Point’s new heathland-style golf course is so much more interesting and enjoyable to play. The firm, tight playing conditions allow you to use the contours and slopes to your advantage. Run-up and bank shots are way more fun and creative than shooting directly at the pin every time. When around the greens, there are many options. You can putt, pitch or run shots with a straight-faced iron, or flop it with a lofted wedge. Whatever you decide, use your imagination, enjoy the views, play creative shots and have a fun day at Sand Point.” Craig Hunter, Director of Golf

“The Sand Point renovation created a course that looks like it did when first opened in 1927, and the transformation to a heathland-style achieves an aesthetic unique in the Northwest. The design showcases a natural and rugged edge, but great care is given to providing high-quality turfgrass and solid playing conditions. Coupling these features with panoramic views of Lake Washington makes Sand Point a fantastic place to enjoy a round of golf.” Marcus Harness, Golf Course Superintendent

“I recall our first meeting with David and Nick [Schaan, Kidd’s design associate] following a walking tour of the course. David said to the Green Committee: ‘We get asked all the time to do renovations such as this and politely decline. After walking the course, we felt this project could really turn into something special.’ And it did!” Owen Westervelt, General Manager
